Abstract:
The vision of the “people” shifts over the course of the Psalms’ literary development. While it is consistently represented in liturgical terms and thus may be said to be constituted as a “liturgical people,” it also represents transregional identity that shows changes in boundaries and definition in line with its sociopolitical conditions from the Iron Age through the Greco-Roman period. Beginning with its construction within a series of binary oppositions, “people” in the Psalms not only reflects ongoing political and cultural challenges, but also serves to reimagine them, in conjunction with other marks of identity in flux.
