Abstract:
43 students from the former USSR who emigrated to Germany, and the same number who emigrated to Israel, most of them in 1990-91, were interviewed in 1995-96. Notes that they grew up in the 1970s-80s, when Jews suffered from social stigma as well as many restrictions (e.g. in admission to universities). They also experienced the beginning of the "perestroika", when radical antisemitic groups became a threat. Nevertheless, in these interviews they recalled only isolated antisemitic incidents, whose importance they minimized. The explanation may lie in the students' intense and proud identification with Russian culture, doubly important to them now in emigration.
