Abstract:
The earliest account of the introduction of Masonry into the United States is in a history (written in 1833) of a lodge organized in Newport, Rhode Island by Jewish immigrants ca. 1658. That community seems to have dispersed. The establishment of the first duly authorized lodge in Newport, again by immigrant Jews, occurred in1749 with the founding of St. John's Lodge No. 1. These were the famous Jews of colonial Newport. Suggests that in the second half of the 18th century, from two-thirds to five-sixths of the Newport Jewish community belonged to the Masonic fraternity.
