Abstract:
In December 1880, the liberal historian Theodor Mommsen came out with an attack against his colleague Heinrich von Treitschke and the growing antisemitic movement in Germany. Examines here the writings of these two scholars in regard to the Jews, and points out the differences, but also similarities, in their views. While Treitschke was a radical antisemite, Mommsen supported Jewish emancipation and accepting their integration in the German sphere. He nevertheless criticized their particularity and unwillingness to learn about Christianity or to adopt the Christian religion. Thereby, both historians viewed the Jews as "different" from their surrounding society and agreed that there was a problem in their adaptability and acceptability.
