Abstract:
European antisemitism was introduced in Iraq by the White Russian-influenced Rasul al-Kadri in 1924. Despite a violent anti-Zionist press campaign and anti-Jewish demonstrations in Baghdad in 1928-29, Iraqi Jews were officially tolerated so long as they did not support Zionism. With independence in 1932, the regime became strongly nationalistic and religious. Under German influence, exclusive societies were formed to preach pan-Arabism and antisemitism, such as the intellectual society al-Matna and the paramilitary youth organization al-Pituwa. In September 1936, violence erupted against the Jews following an unsuccessful general strike. From 1937 on, Jews were pressed to declare their hostility to Zionism and were subject to daily harassment culminating in the pogrom of June 1941, during the Rashid Ali revolt. The British suppression of the revolt brought an end to most pro-Nazi and antisemitic activities.
