Abstract:
Since January 2000, when representatives of 48 countries signed the Stockholm Declaration on Holocaust Education, this subject was included in school curricula worldwide. States, however, that the ambitious aims posited by the educators - to promote tolerance and eliminate all forms of hatred, bigotry, and racism in society, to combat antisemitism and Holocaust denial, and to prevent further acts of genocide - often collide with what Phil Revell called a "hidden curriculum". This "hidden curriculum" includes the national tradition in every country where the Holocaust is taught, the infuence of the students' families, and even the impact of other subjects being taught at the school. In practice, the "hidden curriculum" always wins over the official one. Expresses doubts that Holocaust education is able to create a better society, and feels that educators must abandon their high-flying goals. They should act according to the "taxi-driver concept in education" - i.e. "pick the kid up where he is standing"; that is, to take into account the ethnic, social, etc. background of the student.
