Abstract:
The Modern Orthodox movement has been quite successful in establishing a presence in the United States. It seeks to distinguish itself from the extremes of ultra-Orthodoxy on the one hand and those who are willing to change normative practices in Judaism on the other. It tends to be successful in producing new communities and keeping its children within the religion and that form of Judaism. It has so far managed to walk the tightrope between assimilation into civil society and dissociation from the wider cultural sphere. Politically the movement tends to veer more toward the right than the rest of the Jewish community, and in this it appears to be similar to some Christian groups.
