Abstract:
Often overlooked as a mundane aspect of the body, hair is a helpful entry point into understanding the Jewish experience throughout history. This chapter takes a chronological lifetime approach, tracing Jewish hair practices from childhood through death. It also discusses the politicization of Jewish hair, addressing both the role of hair in the Holocaust as well as in anti-Semitic caricatures. Through this approach it becomes clear that Jewish hair is more than simply style; it represents an outgrowth of personhood and how Jewish bodies are treated both within and outside of the community.
