Abstract:
Some Jews wear very distinctive clothes, and there are rules in the Bible about clothing, but they do not explain what Jews wear today on the whole. There are rules of modesty that are taken to oblige those who take them seriously to conceal parts of their body and often to wear clothes that seem inappropriate given the climate of the country in which they live. On the other hand, difficulty in religion often attracts rather than the reverse, and establishes a serious and committed attitude in its followers. The role of clothing in religion will be discussed as part of trying to understand how such rituals are organized and what it means to follow them.
