Abstract:
The Amen meal is a new ritual for women, with the primary goal of reciting the maximum number of amens as responses to blessings on food. The chapter will explore the Amen meal ritual in terms of its characteristics and components. It will argue that the Amen ritual is a part of the New Age phenomenon and will describe the social and cultural contexts and circumstances that created and supported this ritual. The data are based on a qualitative-ethnographic feminist study, including in-depth interviews and participant observation. The participants’ actions, attitudes, and perceptions cited in the chapter show that the Amen rituals make possible the creation of a new space that sets out to respond to women’s spiritual, feminine, social gratifications and needs. The Amen meal is a new powerful ritual for New Age women seeking to express their feelings of autonomy.
