Abstract:
The Wars of the Lord, the great Aristotelian book by Rabbi Levi Gersonides (1288-1344), begins with a poem. In this introductory poem, he sings of the creation ofheaven and earth, the stars, and the human being; he then mentions the divinechoice of Israel, and concludes with praise of God. He thus imitates the Bible, which begins with the creation of heaven and earth, the lights in the sky, and Adamand Eve, then relates the story of the people of Israel, and only subsequently setsdown the Psalms. The introductory poem is not merely decorative. It makes anexistential statement about the place of the human being in the universe, and is anappropriate opening for Gersonides' philosophic book.An annotated edition of the poem accompanies the discussion
