Abstract: The article focuses on the book Gan-Yeladim (Kindergarten) by Itzhak Katzenelson, published in 1918 by Ha-Or in Warsaw and distributed to Hebrew kindergartens throughout the Jewish Diaspora and the Land of Israel. Katzenelson's book was an important foundation of Hebrew literature for pre-school children. The Katznelson family owned a chain of educational institutions in Łódź (Poland) during the first half of the Twentieth Century. Among them was the first Hebrew kindergarten in town, founded by Sheindel Feinstein-Katzenelson, the eldest sister of Itzhak Katzenelson and the great-grandmother of the writer of this article. By means of the literature Itzhak and Sheindel created for pre-schoolchildren an educational path in Hebrew, targeting the pre-literate stage. The article discusses the means by which Yitzhak Katznelson's poetry provided a tool forteaching children how to speak Hebrew, as well as a basis for the construction of anew free and Zionist Jewish identity. It draws theoretical outlines and describes the historical context for the discussion, which will place the educational programs of the Katzenelsons in the broader scene of developments within the Jewish cultural education in Europe before the First World War and between the two world wars.
