Abstract:
Modern historiography of Ottoman Jews long analyzed the demographic and socio-economic positions of Jews in parallel to the political and military developments the Empire went through. According to this, the 15th and 16th centuries meant the “Golden Age” for the Ottoman Jews. However, between the “Golden Age” and the 19th century, during which the modern institutions were established, the 17th and 18th centuries meant a period of “decline” due to the disintegration of the State. In other words, Ottoman Jews declined demographically and lost their influence in society and among the ruling elite during these two centuries. Based on some hitherto unused archival materials, the present article shows whether this discourse applies to all Jewish communities by specifically focusing on the Edirne Jewish Community.
