Abstract:
Isaac Ochberg was born in Uman, Ukraine, and emigrated to South Africa in 1895. He was active in an array of Jewish causes during his lifetime in Cape Town, among them as the founder and president of the Cape Jewish Orphanage. After World War I, when civil war and pogroms broke out in Ukraine he conceived and carried out his plan to save Jewish orphans in Ukraine. In 1921, he travelled to Ukraine and brought circa 200 children with him back to South Africa.
