Abstract:
Slovenian literary works from the 16th century to the present have reflected anti-Jewish prejudices and stereotypes prevalent in European culture: the Jew as the enemy of Jesus, the callous shop owner or usurer, the greedy inn-keeper, etc. Jewish women are often portrayed as materialistic, and loving luxury. Discusses negative Jewish images in works by the two most influential Slovenian authors of the modern period: the poet France Prešeren (1800-1849) and the prose writer Ivan Cankar (1876-1918). Cankar, following his contemporary, the poet Anton Aškerc, also used the motif of the Wandering Jew.
