Abstract:
Argues that German remembrance of the Holocaust has a self-serving and instrumental undercurrent to it; it is mostly concerned with perpetrators and victims. Jan Karski represents a model for an ethical engagement with the Holocaust that the Germans could never aspire to. Notes that Karski was ignored in Germany for a long time. Discusses, also, Karski’s testimony as given in Claude Lanzmann’s film "Shoah".
