Abstract:
Disagreeing with claims that the Auschwitz Sonderkommando was in the shadows of historiography and neglected until recently, shows that the main written testimonies on it, left by the last "bearers of the secret" of the Holocaust, were studied by scholars, published, and translated into various languages during the postwar years. Yet there has, undeniably, been a marked increase in scholarly and popular interest in the SK since the late 1980s. Dwells on the story of four women - Ala Gertner, Roza Robota, Regina Safirsztajn, and Estera Wajcblum - who were hanged in Auschwitz in January 1945 for smuggling explosives to the Sonderkommando. Examines the politics of memory surrounding how they are remembered and represented. Deplores the fact that both scholarly literature and popular culture (books, films, etc.) tend to focuse on Roza Robota and diminish the role of the three other women in the resistance in Auschwitz.
