Abstract:
Focuses on the period 1945-47, describing the appearance of the camp after the Germans abandoned it leaving the bodies, bones, and human ashes. Reconstructs the collection of the corpses, removal of the dead from the infirmary, religious ceremonies undertaken by former prisoners, and activities of the Polish Red Cross and medical personnel. The area of the former camp was administered by Polish and Soviet authorities (initially by the military), the Polish Society of Former Political Prisoners, and the Catholic Church. Notes, also, the mishandling of corpses, not in accordance with official practice; i.e. cases of locals looking for valuables who entered the camp and mishandled the corpses.
