Abstract:
Discusses Holocaust diaries of four public figures and one young woman, written in the Warsaw ghetto. The public figures include Emanuel Ringelblum (1900-1944), head of the "Oneg Shabbat" archives; Adam Czerniaków (1880-1942), head of the Judenrat until his suicide in July 1942; Abraham Lewin (1893-1943), a Zionist leader; and Chaim Aron Kaplan (1880-1942), a Zionist educator. The fifth diary was written by Mary Berg (b. 1924), who was able to leave the Warsaw ghetto with her parents and sister in 1943, thanks to her mother's U.S. citizenship.
