Abstract:
This article is the first in a three-part section of this issue of the journal, entitled "Monografía: Las elegías hebreas sobre la persecuciones de 1391 en Hispania". The second article, also by Norman Roth, is entitled "1391 in Aragón, Catalonia, Valencia and Majorca" (pp. 49-75). The third part, "Elegías hebreas sobre la persecuciones de 1391 en España", by Carlos del Valle, Norman Roth, and Arie Schippers (pp. 77-113), presents the text of 14 elegies in Judeo-Spanish or in English translation, collected from various sources, with annotations. Roth argues that although the anti-Jewish riots of 1391 were tragic and had far-reaching consequences, their scope is greatly exaggerated by historians. Considers that the number of Jews who converted or were murdered and the number of synagogues destroyed by the mob in that year was relatively small. The royal authorities did their best to protect the Jews during the riots. Casts doubt on Hasdai Crescas' authorship of the letter allegedly sent by him to the Jews of Avignon which quotes a much larger number of victims.
