Abstract:
After the "Kristallnacht" pogrom in November 1938, 65 Jewish newspapers and journals were shut down by the Nazis. Only one new periodical, the "Jüdisches Nachrichtenblatt", was allowed, in Berlin, mainly to promulgate Nazi orders. Focuses on the role played by the newspaper in Jewish emigration and welfare. It was connected to the Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland, and was published under the supervision of the Nazi Ministry of Propaganda, which also appointed its editors and workers. Until deportations began in October 1941, the paper focused on aid for emigration, which was still allowed. Afterward, in spite of Nazi censorship, some articles included hints of advice on how to avoid deportation and survive. Presents quotations from advertisements and articles concerning emigration from 1938-1941.
