Abstract:
Traces the history of the Deutsche Vortrupp (DV), a pro-Nazi German Jewish organization active between 1933-35, which advocated the "rescue" of Germany through a policy of blood and race. It was founded by the Jewish scientist of religion, Hans-Joachim Schoeps, after the model of the German youth movement, in order to provide excluded Jewish youngsters with an alternative. The DV, whose membership never exceeded 150, rejected both assimilation and Zionism, and strove to establish a "third front" within the Jewish community. The basis of the Jewish/German double existence envisioned by Schoeps was awareness of one's Jewish identity and identification with the new Germany, whose racial policy he viewed as temporary. Discusses the DV's interaction with other German Jewish organizations, especially nationalist ones. Concludes that, although the DV played only a marginal role among Jews, its arguments were noted in the internal debate. The organization was dissolved and forbidden by the Nazis.
