Abstract:
Discusses Freud's views on hatred of the Jews, presented in his "Der Mann Moses und die monotheistische Religion" (1939), as the first sociological theory on the origins of antisemitism. In addition to ascribing religious Christian roots to antisemitism and viewing it as a response to narcissistic vexation and fear of castration, Freud also seeks motives for anti-Judaism in concrete social phenomena and lays the blame partly on the Jews for setting themselves apart. Concludes that it has taken theoretical antisemitism research several decades to sort out Freud's contradictory ideas and stop seeking causes for anti-Judaism in Jewish religion or behavior.
