Abstract: Discusses antisemitism as a cultural code in the Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands (KPD) and the Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD), as reflected in left-wing newspapers in Bremen between 1924-28. The communist papers denounced antisemitism perpetrated by the extreme right, but otherwise portrayed the Jews as rich, conspiring capitalists. The KPD did not try to analyze or stigmatize antisemitism, and used antisemitic codes and images for its own purposes. The SPD perpetuated antisemitic stereotypes by attributing them to their adversaries and demanded irreproachable and exemplary behavior of Jews, but paid much more attention to antisemitic acts than did the KPD. Argues that the frequent use of anti-Jewish stereotypes in the communist press was an indication of structural antisemitism in the party's ideology, whereas the SPD "only" gave in to everyday antisemitism in tune with the times, in an effort to cast a wide net.
