Abstract: Discusses the competence and activities of the Holy Office in Venice vis-à-vis Jews and Judaizers between 1541-1794. The Venetian government exercised strict control and demanded that three of its senators be present at the Inquisitional Tribunal besides the three ecclesiastical judges. The archives of the Holy Office give a clear picture of the protection offered by the Republic to the Jews and, under certain circumstances, also to Judaizers. The prosecution of Conversos for Judaizing became increasingly difficult and finally impossible after the 1589 "Ricondotta", which granted protection to Eastern and Western merchants of Jewish origin and made it possible for former Conversos to settle in the Venice ghetto as Jews. The proceedings against the Jews and Judaizers also provide information about the settlement of Iberian Conversos in Venice, everyday life in the ghetto, and the relationship between Jews and Christians in the city.
