Abstract:
Discusses U.S. immigration policy in the 1930s-40s, using the case of Berthold Erdstein as an example. Erdstein was born in Vienna in 1899. He immigrated to the U.S. in January 1939, bringing over his wife and children soon afterwards. However, his many efforts to bring his parents were unsuccessful. Notes that in 1924 American immigration quotas were set according to country of birth, and were drastically reduced for Eastern European countries. Although his parents were born in Poland and he was aware of the law, Erdstein left no stone unturned. However, all his pleas to the State Department were to no avail. Contends that the harsh enforcement of the immigration laws was due to economic hardships and to antisemitism, which was widespread in the U.S. Erdstein's parents were deported and murdered in May 1942.
