Abstract:
Discusses anti-Jewish measures in Nice and Alpes-Maritimes between 1940-44. Many of the German, Austrian, and Czech Jews that had arrived in the département illegally between 1939-40 were initially put under house arrest. In 1942, 1,000 Jews were arrested by the French police; however, it remained a one-time event due to vocal public and Church protests. During the Italian occupation (November 1942-September 1943) Jews arrived en masse. The Italians ignored Nazi directives, kept the anti-Jewish prefect in check, and put an end to acts of persecution. The subsequent German occupation was, in contrast, marked by extreme cruelty. Between September-December 1943, 2,000 Jews were arrested. Of the 20,000-25,000 Jews who sought refuge in Alpes-Maritimes between 1940-44, 3,612 were deported, over 400 of them children.
