Abstract: Summarizes the research report "Gewillig Belgie" submitted in February 2007 to the Belgian government by the independent Center for Research and Documentation of War and Society (CEGES/SOMA) on the collaboration of government departments, local administrations, and police with the anti-Jewish policies of the Nazi occupiers. Takes issue with the report's allegation that there was widespread antisemitism already in prewar Belgium, especially among the elite. Cites Belgians who rescued Jews and hid them in children's homes and with private families, and who were backed morally and financially by the Belgian government-in-exile. Conversely, the Jews of West European origin (a small elite group) gave little sympathy or support to East European refugees, and the Jewish Council (the AJB) collaborated in organizing the deportations.
