Abstract:
Discusses rabbinic responsa during the Holocaust, which reflect the difficulties of conducting a religious Jewish life-style at the time. The questions presented to the various rabbis, recorded by them after the war, were mainly asked in the ghettos, but also in labor and concentration camps. The issues addressed include whether it is permitted to pose as a non-Jew, to provide the Nazis with lists for deportations, to save one Jew by sacrificing another, to escape or to help someone else to escape, and to endanger one's life to observe religious practices.
