Abstract:
Discusses how the union of the Roman Empire and the Catholic Church caused a shift in early Christianity's interpretation of Judaism. Christianity's doctrine of supersessionism was reflected in theology as well as in the body politic. From the 4th century, Jews were considered as solely responsible for their own suffering. This view justified attacks against Jews and Judaism; for instance, Ambrose, bishop of Milan, defended the Christian arson of a synagogue in his city, and John Chrysostom's invective went beyond rhetoric and called for violence against Jews. Augustine's apocalyptic view of history led him to be ferociously anti-Jewish. He saw the Jews as the crucifiers of Jesus and recalcitrant about repentance, His views influenced thinkers through the modern day. The view of Jews as the final enemies of Christ are an inheritance of an age of Christian theology which was as flawed as it was brilliant.
