Abstract:
Refutes Götz Aly's thesis, in his book "Hitler's Volksstaat" (2004), that Hitler "bought" the Germans with money robbed from the Jews. Contends, along with Martin Dean, that only 2%-3% of the war effort and German social services were covered by despoiled Jewish wealth; they were mainly financed through the subjection of the European production apparatus to "lex germanica". The use of the assets of the despoilment is hard to assess. Criticizes Aly for ignoring the fact that significant sums "evaporated" in some instances in the Aryanization hierarchy; even in Eastern Europe, where procedures were more strictly formalized, the booty was not totally centralized. Concludes that, despite its flaws, Aly's book calls for a review of the depth of German antisemitism, describes the scope of the despoilment, and reveals the fact that the postwar German economic miracle was built on a production apparatus set up by Hitler.
