Abstract:
Antisemitism has become a serious problem in Great Britain in the last five years, with an increase in the number of incidents. Its many forms include rightist extremists, leftist anti-Zionists, and Islamist Judeophobes. London is a world center of Muslim demonization of Jews and Israel. Britain has recently produced homegrown terrorists who have joined the global jihad movement, spurred by local and foreign imams. Discusses anti-Zionism in British politics (e.g. Ken Livingstone and George Galloway), as well as calls for academic and economic boycotts of Israel. The old-new antisemitism, which was much worse in 2005, included anti-Jewish stereotypes and anti-Zionism, especially among British elites and the media, and sometimes reflected attempts to Nazify Jews, Judaism, and Israel. Concludes that Britain has become home to waves of anti-Jewish sentiments and views, especially but not exclusively among British Muslims, which have gained legitimacy in public discourse. Pp. 118-121 present a partial transcript of a February 2006 Parliamentary Inquiry into Antisemitism, in which Wistrich and others gave testimony.
