Abstract:
A revised version of a lecture delivered at the University of Tokyo, December 2005. Contends that Celan's poems counter the German culture of public commemoration of the Holocaust, the attempt to "deal with" it and the desire to obliterate and forget it; they are a direct expression of pain, and in his later poems, a probing of the wound of memory. Interprets several of these later poems in detail.
