Abstract:
Discusses the architecture of the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, the views of architect James Ingo Freed (whose family emigrated from Germany to the U.S. in 1939), and disagreements with the Fine Arts Commission which had to approve the design as to the museum's position vis-a-vis other buildings on the Mall. States that for many people, Freed's building successfully negotiates the maze of taboos and imperatives that govern Holocaust representation.
