Abstract:
Discusses responses of German Jewish historians and publicists between 1933-1938 to the rise of Nazism, noting that Jewish historical research intensified at the time. During the Weimar and early Nazi periods, some historians felt that their writings could help the Jews by integrating Jewish and German history, thereby negating Nazi arguments that the Jews were alien elements in the country's history, From 1935 on, Jewish historians criticized racist works published by the Reichsinstitut für Geschichte des neuen Deutschlands, deploring their lack of objectivity. Describes essays and books written by Jewish historians up to the "Kristallmacht" pogrom in 1938, which put an end to any Jewish discourse with Germans.
