Abstract:
Discusses two factors which functioned in the attempt to convince the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa to permit the Jews of Prague (whom she had expelled in 1744) to return - intercession by Jews and the protests of non-Jewish individuals and groups. Argues that it was the influence of the non-Jews, who wanted the Jews back largely for financial reasons (e.g. to share the tax burden), that was effective. Though the intercession by Jews (especially the Court Jew Wolf Wertheimer) was not the factor that changed the Empress's mind, it gave support to the Jews of Prague both in terms of morale and also materially until they were given permission to return to Prague in 1748.
