Abstract:
Pp. 55-62 contain an essay originally published in "Tarbut" 4 (1976) by Venclova, a Lithuanian poet and scholar living in the USA. Discusses the causes of the 1941 pogroms after the German occupation of Lithuania in view of the relatively good relations between the two peoples throughout history. However, there were some occurrences of antisemitism in Lithuanian history and there was little contact between the two peoples. Argues that possibly this "spiritual isolation" was the cause of ethnic stereotypes and hostility. Many Lithuanians also blame the Jews for sympathizing with communism, and for alleged participation in Soviet purges in Lithuania in 1941. Pp. 62-67 contain an open letter by A. Žuvintas, who explains the 1941 events by hatred towards Jews aroused by the large proportion of Jews in the Lithuanian communist movement and their support for the Soviet annexation. Includes a reply by Venclova written in April 1978, and a postscript written in 1988.
