Abstract:
Examines the persistence of the Judeo-communist theory, which holds the Jews responsible for communism. The allegations of Judeo-communism made by European right-wing extremists and often mainstream conservatives became a self-fulfilling prophecy; the more Jews were persecuted by right-wing parties and governments, the more likely were politically active Jews to turn to the Left for defense and support. Presents brief case studies of the Judeo-communist theory in Russia and Ukraine at the time of and after the Bolshevik Revolution, in Poland between 1939-41, and in the USA during the Cold War. Emphasizes the strong historical linkage between anti-communism and antisemitism. Notes that, in contrast to other countries, the anti-communist crusade in the USA did not single out Jews.
