Abstract:
Surveys the attitude of the Russian Orthodox Church towards Jews and Judaism from the 10th century to the present. It was in many ways consonant with that of the Catholic Church, but also had some distinctive features. While Russian rulers have initiated and carried out anti-Jewish policies, the Church has never declared any definite position on the Jews. Thus, a harsh anti-Jewish position of some hierarchs has coexisted with a philosemitic attitude on the part of others. The veneration of Church Fathers, whose authority is incontestable in the Russian Church, has reinforced anti-Jewish traditions. Divides the present-day Russian clergy and laity into four groups; only one is ready for Christian-Jewish dialogue, while two are harshly antisemitic. The leadership of the Church abstains from criticizing antisemitic declarations of some clerics, tolerates antisemitic publications printed by its publishing houses, and attacks pro-Judaic and liberal declarations of Church members.
