Abstract:
Examines relations between Jews in Dallas and the KKK, which was at the peak of its local influence in the early 1920s. Despite the flogging of one Jew, the elite Jewish business community did not protest, and even maintained social and business ties with known Klansmen, including local leaders Jewish passivity, was a reflection of the fear of stirring up antisemitism. However, Klan influence soon declined. A local newspaper owned by James E. Ferguson, an ex-governor who had been impeached, attacked the Klan, but also attacked local Jews for being cozy with the Klan for business reasons. His diatribes were antisemitic.
