Abstract:
A history of the Institut, created by the Germans in May 1941. Headed by Paul Sézille, the IEQJ served as a supra-political informer and cover for Nazi propaganda in France. Examines the profiles of its ca. 11,000 members and sympathizers, as well as of those who turned to it to denounce Jews. Poster campaigns were launched in cooperation with the German Propaganda Staffel in Paris, and a huge media campaign boosted the popularity of the exhibition "Le Juif et la France", which was organized by the IEQJ. However, its two monthly journals did not reach wide audiences. The IEQJ was liquidated in June 1942, after the French government had embraced the policy of mass deportations. By then, Sézille's aggressive attacks on Vichy had become an embarrassment to the Germans. Sézille continued his activities as an agitator until his death in 1944. The other leaders of the IEQJ received mild sentences when tried in 1949.
