Abstract:
An outline for an upcoming study on how the Shoah was dealt with by French television between 1945-2000. Discusses the periodization and delimitation of the subject with regard to specific French circumstances. French TV stations rarely presented testimonies by survivors before 1974, since the then state-controlled medium was geared to boosting national unity. Programs dealing with the Shoah were avoided for fear that they might open old wounds through memories of the Vichy period and French collaboration. The upcoming study will examine documentaries as well as fiction, and consider the context in which Shoah-related programs were broadcast.
