Abstract: Summarizes Yehuda Deutsch's book "Bor: Sahar avadim be-milhemet ha-olam ha-shniyah" ("Bor: Slave Trade during World War II", 1998), in which he describes the fate of Hungarian Jews in military labor service units who were sent to work at the copper mines in Bor, Serbia. Bor was occupied by the Germans in 1941; the work there was overseen by the Todt Organization. Ca. 3,000 Hungarian Jews were sent to 33 labor camps in the area in 1943, and another 3,000 were sent after the German occupation of Hungary in 1944. Many Jews were killed or injured while working under difficult conditons in the mines. In September 1944 the remaining Jews were sent on a death march back to Hungary, during which many more were killed. They were then sent to Germany, Austria, or various concentration camps; very few survived.
