Abstract: Describes events in Vienna that preceded the expulsion of the Jews in 1670 and the reasons for the expulsion. Dismisses theories that the expulsion was a result of pressure exerted on Leopold I by the "Spanish faction" at his court, or that it evolved due to economic considerations. Argues that it was supernatural thinking and anti-Jewish superstitions (fear of Jewish magic, belief in their anti-Christian scheming, etc.) that effected the decision concerning the expulsion. These superstitions were shared by the two parties involved in the ousting of the Jews - the burghers (whose psychology was fully expressed by the city's mayor, Holzner) and the aristocracy; they were supported by the third involved party, the Church. The story of the Viennese expulsion helps to dismiss the historical models ascribing the leading cultural role (especially the civilizing and rationalizing role) to the absolutist court. Pp. 31-33 contain historical documents.
