Abstract:
Israeli poet Dan Pagis (1930-1986), a Holocaust survivor from Bukovina, began to relate to the Holocaust in his writings only in 1970. Discusses his poem "Akevot" ("Footprints"), published in his collection "Gilgul" in that year. States that the escape of the author from collective identity enabled him to relate on a personal level to his Holocaust experiences. The self-hatred instilled by the Nazis did not allow him to do this previously.
