Abstract: In the 6th century, Bishop Avitus adopted an active proselytization policy and accused his opponents of overly tolerant attitudes towards the Jews. The historian Gregory of Tours recounts that a Jewish attack on a converted Jew led to the destruction of a synagogue by a mob and to baptism of most of the Jews. Those refusing to convert were expelled. The poet Venantius Fortunatus wrote a poem emphasizing the Jews' responsibility for fracturing the Christian unity of the town, and its restoration by their conversion.
