Abstract:
Traces the history of the New Christians in Brazil in the 16th-18th centuries. Despite economic success, the New Christians faced hostility rooted in medieval Christian prejudices, which was not wiped out by the Jews' conversion. Denunciations to the Inquisition were common. After a short period of tolerance under Dutch rule (1630-1654), most Crypto-Jews Jews were assimilated into Christian society but antisemitic stereotypes persisted.
