Abstract: In 1855, during hearings in the California State Assembly on the bill to suppress Sunday trading in two counties (Santa Cruz and Santa Clara), the speaker, William W. Stow, made an antisemitic statement and called on the Assembly to levy the Jews with a special tax which in fact would prohibit their residence in California. Henry J. Labatt, a prominent Californian Jew, wrote a reply which was printed in San Francisco newspapers. On the demand of Los Angeles Jewry (and Labatt's brother Samuel), Henry Labatt’s letter, as well as the proceedings of the Assembly debate, were reprinted in the Los Angeles newspaper "Star". Presents both the text of the proceedings and of Labatt’s letter.
Note: A revised version appeared as "The Labatts' attack in San Francisco and Los Angeles" in "Western States Jewish History" 28,3 (1996) 179-188.
