Abstract:
Both the federal and the cantonal police stamped documents with a "J" to indicate a Jewish immigrant or transient. These stamps clearly served to discriminate against Jews and prevent their stay, without the persons concerned being aware of it and able to defend themselves. Contends that the use of the stamps already in 1936 indicates that the agreement with Germany on the "J" stamp in Jewish passports originated with the Swiss. Guido Koller, "Der J-Stempel auf schweizerischen Formularen" (ibid., pp. 371-374) suggests that the stamp may have been affixed retroactively for statistical purposes.
