Abstract:
In the 1890s, a sinister image of the South African Jew as connected to a network of international finance emerged both among the British Left and in South Africa. The abortive Jameson Raid in Transvaal in 1895 served for many as a demonstration of the connection between Jewish finance and British imperialism. The Anglo-Boer war enhanced the image of the "cosmopolitan" (i.e. Jewish) capital behind the British conflict with the Boers. John A. Hobson enunciated clearly the view of the conspiratorial nature of international Jewish capital. The idea of warmongering Jewish international finance became popular in South Africa. It was at this time that the popular cartoon character Hoggenheimer, the quintessential Jewish parvenu, emerged in the South African press.
